A wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical treatment that removes one or more of the four adult molars that develop in the top and bottom corners of your mouth.
These molars are the last of your permanent teeth to erupt in your mouth, appearing in your late teens or early twenties.
In some circumstances, wisdom teeth emerge without creating any complications. However, if there isn’t enough space for teeth to form properly, you may require extraction surgery.
Dr. Harouni may prescribe wisdom tooth extraction after a complete dental examination if there isn’t enough room in your mouth for the molars to grow naturally. He may recommend surgery for impacted molars if:
Wisdom teeth that are impacted can cause pain and increase your chances of acquiring a dental infection. Food and germs can become trapped behind an impacted molar, causing tooth decay and gum disease.
Dr. Harouni can surgically extract any impacted wisdom teeth to avoid severe dental problems.
Dr. Harouni employs intravenous (IV) sedation to keep you comfortable throughout the treatment. He will also apply a local anesthetic to numb your gums so you will not feel any pain during the procedure. With IV sedation, you are awake but very calm.
Dr. Harouni carefully extracts the wisdom teeth and their roots before suturing the wound. Dr. Harouni applies clean gauze to the surgical area to reduce bleeding.
If you’ve been given IV sedation, you’ll need to rest for a few minutes before heading home.
Everyone is affected differently by extraction surgery. Over-the-counter or prescribed medicines may be required to keep you comfortable. Ice packs can also benefit from post-surgery swelling.
Dr. Harouni will give you an aftercare plan to make sure that you recover appropriately. You should avoid physical activity for the first 24 hours following surgery and eat only soft foods. Rinse your mouth after eating to remove food and bacteria from the surgery site to avoid infection.
You must schedule a follow-up appointment with Dr. Harouni so that he can examine how your gums are healing and remove the sutures.
