Why do I need corrective jaw surgery?

Corrective jaw surgery, also known as orthognathic surgery, addresses a variety of dental and skeletal abnormalities of the jaw and teeth.

Dr. Harouni may recommend corrective surgery if you have:

  • A facial injury
  • An abnormal bite
  • Chronic jaw joint pain
  • A protruding or receding jaw
  • Difficulty biting or chewing food

You may also need corrective jaw surgery if you have sleep apnea, a condition that causes you to temporarily stop breathing during your sleep.

LeFort

This procedure is also known as an upper jaw advancement and corrects a misaligned bite. Before and after this type of surgery, you also need orthodontics, such as braces, to ensure successful results.

Sagittal split

This is a surgical procedure to split the lower jaw and improve its position. This type of corrective jaw surgery straightens jaw alignment and corrects alignment issues of the teeth.

Genioplasty

A genioplasty is a surgical procedure to advance, rotate, or push back the chin to improve your jaw alignment. This type of jaw alignment surgery can improve the position of the jaw and the overall appearance of the facial structure.

Dr. Harouni can determine what type of corrective jaw surgery is right for you after an evaluation of your symptoms, physical exam, and special X-rays.

How do I prepare for corrective jaw surgery?

Prior to surgery, you may need braces or other orthodontics to help move your jaw into alignment. Dr. Harouni works with your orthodontist to determine how long orthodontics are necessary before surgery.

When you’re ready for surgery, Dr. Harouni will perform orthognathic surgery to re-align the way your teeth come together. This will be done in the hospital under general anesthesia to keep you comfortable. Typically, he performs these surgeries from inside your mouth, without needing to make incisions on your face.

Once he moves your jawbone into position, he may use screws or wires to hold your jaw in place and fuse it to the bone over time. In some cases, he may need to add extra bone taken from another area of your jaw to support your teeth and facial structure.

Depending on the nature of the surgery, recovery can take four to six weeks. Dr. Harouni provides a complete aftercare plan to ensure your jaw heals and has full functionality.
